How I color my comics

1. First, I draw the first sketch and the layout of the plates on a paper. I work on it a few times to get an accurate drawing.

I scan the plate and take each small illustration one by one to get them as if they were actual paintings.
During this process I go back to the global vision of the plate and I try to keep the dynamics of the lines, forms and colors.

2. Construction on computer with Krita.

With Krita, I work on the perspective and I polish up the details.

3. Focusing on rag paper.

I print the picture I got with Krita and I trace it on rag paper.

4. Basic watercolors shadows.

Now, I can start the coloring. I put the shadows first by using blue-shaded mauve. I am now precise enough to see where I want to go. I put three layers of shadows.

5. Colors.

I color and I make sure to keep a good balance.

6. Redrawing the line above the color.

I put the tip of the pen over by using Krita’s settings (here’s the link http://www.davidrevoy.com/article239/cleaning-blue-lines-sketch-in-krita). If necessary, I work with contrast and light filters.

7. Special effects with Krita .

I put in Krita the light and the shadows of the candles with a digital brush.
And that's it!
